With the next full moon party coming up on the 15th, Thailand is preparing itself for the party of the year 1 out of 12 parties of the year!
What was once a somewhat sobering celebration, has now turned into a massive, world famous party of drink, drugs and very loud music. Even Leonardo Di Caprio has been! (okay..it was referenced in The Beach…) Some 20,000+ people flock from all over the world to Haad Rin, Ko Pha Nga to indulge in the islands notorious festivity, fuelled by cheap alcohol and magic mushroom milkshakes (I kid you not).
The first Full Moon Party began at a wooden hut disco not far from the beach in 1985, for the purpose of thanking travellers. The parties gained fame through word of mouth, and the event now draws a crowd of about 5,000–30,000 every full moon evening. The party carries on until sun rise. Bars on the sunrise beach of Haad Rin town stay open, catering to the masses with house music, dance, trance, RnB and reggae.
Although drugs are consumed by many partygoers, drug laws are strict and police enforcement is stepped up during the parties. There are undercover police on patrol and even the drug dealers themselves may report drug users to police. And with one of the worlds strictest laws on drugs, many tourists become victims, albeit of their own demise, to them. Assaults and robberies are high enough for the British government to officially warn tourists to take precautions.
